The emissions that we generate from the fossil fuels (such as coal, oil and gas) that we use to heat our homes or travel around is the biggest contributor to climate change. Burning fossil fuels produces CO2, which is what we call a greenhouse gas because it creates a layer around the earth that traps heat. CO2 isn’t the only greenhouse gas, methane is another. Within Ireland, around 30% of our greenhouse gas emissions come from methane released by agriculture, while just over 65% is CO2 from our energy.
