I would advice them to know the basic scientific concepts involved behind each and every thing that fascinates them.

To become an engineer, its good to start to think, question yourself what yo know and what you dont and figure out the ways to find the answers and figure out the answers. Follow your curiousity.

To be an engineer you need to study science and maths and have a hunger for problem-solving. Do you like studying science and trying to figure out how things work and how you might improve them? There are lots of different types of engineering too, chemical, bioprocess, materials, mechanical, electrical, electronic, biomedical, civil, structural, aerospace and much more. Engineering is so diverse but the common part between all of them is applying science and maths to solve problems.

Find a passion, what is the thing you care about the most?
it could be a) ending poverty b) world peace c) saving planet from pollution/climate change

Once you have this figured out, you would be a better judge in identifying which field of engineering would best suit your passion. Everything else falls into place after that. Wish you all the luck for a career in engineering.

There are lots of different types of engineering. Have a look at some of the companies hiring engineers and look at the job profiles to get some ideas of the different types.
Have a look at the different CAO course options that are available to you and talk to your career guidance teacher about the course choices that you need to make if you want to do engineering. Go to the college/university open days and talk to some of the current students if you can. Walk around a few of the colleges and look at the facilities available. Look also at whether the course you are looking at has a work placement programme (e.g. INTRA internships in DCU), if you would like to do work placement.
If you have any contacts working in engineering quiz them on what you want to know and ask if you could go into their workplace for a look. Or go along to the Limerick for Engineering Showcase on this Thursday 5th March, or the Galway Science & Technology Show (on usually in ~November), or similar events and talk to the people on the different stands, tell them you are thinking of doing engineering and they will tell you about their experiences.
